In the beginning there was the idea of designing the perfect travel bag. We sought the essence of travel in the past, when travel was still a real adventure. The result is a dream of a travel bag. A tribute to the true soul of travel. Travel culture in its purest and most original form. Based on the iconic basic shape of the travel bag, which originated in Duffel, a city in Belgium, in the 18th century. Living history with many authentic and practical details.
The weekender »David« is a sporty travel bag for longer weekend trips of up to 7 days. The bag can be slung casually over the shoulder or carried elegantly by hand on the leather strap. It is particularly easy to open and fill. The leather straps on the side can be detached for additional storage space of up to 80 litres.
The bag is of high quality. All wear points are lined with leather on the outside. All stress points are additionally reinforced. The bottom of the bag is padded and elegantly quilted in "diamond stitch". Our DRAKENSBERG signature element.
We are Daniel and Christoph and live our dream. We founded the DRAKENSBERG label because we want to inspire people to recognize the true value of travel and to strive for it.
To understand the path as a goal and to grow with it. A good trip means learning. About life and about yourself. We know that a good trip can change a whole life. Our travel bags are intended to remind people of the zeitgeist of the 19th and 20th centuries, when travel was still an adventure and travelers were adventurers.
Perhaps you have already noticed that our bags are different.
The bag made of canvas and leather is almost completely handmade in many individual steps. Our master bag makers and saddlers need years of training to be able to produce bags of this quality.
We value natural and high-quality materials and pay attention to sustainability and the environment. GENUINE BUFFALO LEATHER, 100% COTTON, a high material strength and the complete absence of synthetic fibers in our outer fabrics characterize our bags. Handmade premium quality you can feel!
Leather is a natural material and may have small imperfections. Each leather product is also patinated by hand. This complex process makes our products unmistakable. No bag can be exactly like another. Small color deviations are unfortunately unavoidable and not a sign of poor quality.
FAQs: Frequently asked questions about our Duffle bag »David« L Khaki-Beige
IS THE WEEKENDER »DAVID« (L), KHAKI-BEIGE ACCEPTED AS HAND LUGGAGE BY AIRLINES?
Unfortunately, this weekender does not correspond to the dimensions of the usual airlines. So far we haven't had any problems taking this weekender on board as long as it isn't full to bursting. No risk no fun!
DOES THE »DAVID« (L), KHAKI-BEIGE WEEKENDER RETAIN ITS SHAPE OR CAN IT BE STOWED AWAY FLAT?
Our weekender belongs to the so-called soft luggage and consists partly of soft cotton canvas in khaki-beige. Therefore, the shape changes depending on the filling quantity. If you are not looking for adventure, the weekender can be stowed flat and space-saving in the wardrobe. We deliberately do without a plastic lamination, which is required for a solid form.
IS THE WEEKENDER »DAVID« (L), KHAKI-BEIGE WATERPROOF OR WATER-REPELLENT?
The weekender made of canvas and leather was designed based on the classic travel bags of the 19th century. In order to be as authentic as possible, we have only used materials - as they were 100 years ago - and avoid plastics and chemicals as much as possible. Unfortunately, our canvas travel bag is not waterproof or water-repellent in the standard version. However, a short rain shower doesn't bother our bags. Alternatively, the bag can be impregnated against moisture.
CAN THE »DAVID« (L), KHAKI-BEIGE WEEKENDER BE MADE WATERPROOF AFTERWARDS?
The weekender can be impregnated very well afterwards, with a commercial and colorless impregnation spray (e.g. Impregnol). Alternatively, you can also use an impregnation wax (e.g. Dr. Gee's impregnation wax). You should only note that this can change the color and texture of the bag. It is best to test the impregnation on the underside.
HOW CAN I CLEAN AND CARE FOR MY »DAVID« (L), KHAKI-BEIGE WEEKENDER?
We believe that a vintage travel bag can and should be seen to see how intensively it has been used. That's how it has to be. If you still feel the need to clean your bag, we recommend three steps:
- Remove dust and dirt particles from the bag, e.g. with a brush or hand-held vacuum cleaner
- Gently dab and rub away stains with a clean, wet cloth. Consider trying a mild detergent if the stains are stubborn.
- Slightly grease leather from time to time (e.g. leather care with beeswax or carnauba wax). It is best to be careful not to hit the canvas to avoid stains.
WHAT LEATHER IS THE »DAVID« (L), KHAKI-BEIGE WEEKENDER MADE OF?
For the Canvas Weekender we only use vegetable-tanned, full-grain buffalo leather. The particularly robust leather comes from India. During production, our leather is also finished by hand with a colored carnauba-based wax, giving it its special vintage patina. A perfect interplay with our cotton canvas.
WHERE AND HOW IS THE »DAVID« (L), KHAKI-BEIGE WEEKENDER MADE?
Our goods are made in India. Our manufactory is a small family business whose long-standing employees manufacture our bags with a lot of heart and passion. In the meantime, a real friendship has grown from our long cooperation. The production conditions are socially acceptable and correspond to BSCI standards. We convince ourselves of this on a regular basis. Our leather and cotton fabrics are sourced directly locally from India. When dyeing our cotton fabrics, only dyes that are free of AZO dyes are used. Our leathers are basically vegetable tanned, i.e. plant-based and without the use of aggressive tanning agents. Our standards are socially and ecologically justifiable and above average.
Our leather production is LWG certified
Our leather tannery is certified to the LWG standard and we use only vegetable tanning agents for tanning. The Leather Working Group (LWG) is an initiative to make conditions in tanneries and intermediaries more transparent and to bring about sustainable change. To implement its goals, the Leather Working Group has developed an audit protocol for sustainable and responsible leather production.
